Woodrow Wilson

Thomas Woodrow Wilson was born in 1856 and died in 1924. He was the 28th President of the United States and was elected twice, in 1912 and 1916. Wilson started his career teaching. He eventually became president of Princeton University and governor of New Jersey. Wilson was involved in many reforms, including the creation of the Federal Reserve and the 19th amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote. He was also a strong leader during World War I. Wilson is buried at the Washington National Cathedral after dying at the age of 67.

Wilson and Christmas

Wilson made Christmas an important part of his time as President. In 1913, Wilson wanted to start a national tree lighting event, and had a Christmas tree erected at the Capitol for all to share. It was a festive celebration, with hundreds of singing performers, a band and a re-enactment of the Biblical Christmas Story on Christmas Eve.

The elm tree graces the front of the ornament in the foreground of the picture of the White House. President Wilson had this tree planted to be a symbol of peace and hope. This tree would prove apt as his two terms unfolded amidst troubles and, eventually, war throughout the world.

The Ornament

This wonderful Christmas ornament celebrates Woodrow's commitment to peace even as he understood that sometimes peace had to be fought for. His presidency was a time of great war, and Wilson would lead America as it fought for the freedom that others were trying to take. The Elm tree on the White House lawn pictured on the front of this beautiful ornament was planted by Wilson to symbolize hope and peace. On the back is a powerful statement made by Wilson regarding his belief that without liberty, there could be no lasting peace. After World War I was over, Wilson did everything he could to try to make the war the last one. It was his efforts towards lasting peace that led to his receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1919.

The American Presidents Collection Ornament
