Thomas William Jones was commissioned to paint The South Portico at Christmas as the cover art for the successful book, Season's Greetings from the White House. Previously, he had painted a series of White House state rooms for President and Mrs. Reagan. In 1985, The Blue Room at Christmas was reproduced for the official holiday card and for the gift print given to the White House staff.
