Connecticut was the fifth state to join the Union in 1788. Connecticut was founded in 1636 by a Puritan minister, Thomas Hooker, who left the Massachusetts Bay Colony and founded Hartford, its capital. He wanted a place where voting rights were not linked to church membership, and this gave non-church going people more access to politics during that time.

More about the ornament
Connecticut is known as “The Constitution State” because in 1639, they adopted a document called the Fundamental Orders. This document was referred to as the world’s first written Constitution. This document contained some principles, such as the stated powers and limits of government, which were later applied while creating the United States government and our Constitution.
The Charter Oak is the ancient living symbol of Connecticut’s most cherished values and its identity. There was a giant white oak that stood on top of a hill in Hartford for 250 years before it fell, due to a storm. In 1687, the British authorities attempted to confiscate Connecticut’s original Royal Charter of 1662. This document was one of the earliest and most significant legal documents in Connecticut’s history. According to the legend, some patriots hid this important document in the oak tree to prevent it from falling into the hands of the British. Today, the Charter Oak symbolizes the fierce love of liberty and their willingness to do anything to preserve it. [Read more in the included brochure]
