Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born in Hyde Park, NY on January 30,1882. He served 2 terms as New York State senator, then as assistant secretary of the Navy. In August of 1921, Roosevelt contracted polio which resulted in permanent paralysis from the waist down. He held the office of Governor of New York from 1929-1932, then was elected the 32nd President of the United States, taking office on March 4, 1933. FDR served for 12 years and 4 terms, the only president ever to serve more than eight years. With the country in midst of the Great Depression, he enacted programs to bring recovery, especially through the establishment of the Tennessee Valley Authority.
